Mental Health Advocacy Coalition

The Mental Health Foundation chaired and hosted this coalition, also known as MHAC.

MHAC Background

The Mental Health Advocacy Coalition (MHAC) was a coalition of organisations with a stake in mental health in New Zealand.

Its membership was broad and included, consumer networks, family and whanau, non government organisations, mental health service providers, providers of supported employment, DHB provider arms, Colleges of Psychiatry, Mental Health Nursing and General Practice, as well as a range of other perspectives, for example, Maori, Pacific and addiction.

The Mental Health Foundation took a lead role in establishing MHAC 13 years ago and, through MHAC, has provided sector input and advice to the Mental Health Group's policy work programme.

A contract existed between the Foundation and the Ministry of Health for key areas of MHAC's work covering policy advice and sector intelligence.

MHAC members developed a charter establishing10 guiding principles that supported and informed the coalition's work in fulfilling its contractual obligations.

Mental health issues are diverse and cover more than the health sector, therefore MHAC took a broad cross-sector approach covering health, social policy and all related areas.

The coalition has completed its contract with the Ministry of Health and no longer meets.
