Media grant recipient and Auckland singer songwriter, Sam RB, has not held back in tackling her first challenge for the New Year – making it to the finals of the Play it Strange Olympic Songwriting Competition.

Public voting for the competition is now open and Sam RB is keen to get the support of the NZ public for her original song, Stand Tall.

Stand Tall was shortlisted from more than forty entries, recorded professionally at Roundhead Studios and produced by Eddie Rayner just before Christmas,” Sam RB says.

“It was an honour to have my song Stand Tall selected as one of the ten finalists. Working with such great NZ musicians, including Eddie Rayner, Jim Hall, Michael Barker, Brett Adams and Sam Allen was a real privilege.

“Now I need public support, so that Stand Tall is voted onto the Olympic album – and fingers crossed, becomes the New Zealand ‘Song of the Games’.”

When it came to writing Stand Tall, Sam says she imagined what work and sacrifice it would take to be an elite athlete in the NZ Olympic team.

“I wanted to provoke certain emotions in the listener, so I also tapped into the challenges that I have faced over the years and the sense of pride, self-respect and mastery that came from overcoming barriers and achieving in spite of them,” she says.

Sam is now working as a fulltime musician. She launched her debut album – Seems I Might be Human - in 2010 with the support of a NZ Mental Health Media Grant and is currently working on her next album, which she plans to record later this year.

She has recently played at the TSB Bank Festival of Lights in New Plymouth and says it was an amazing experience – “just me and my guitar for one-and-a-half hours on the main stage”.

Vote everyday and go into the draw to win a trip for two to the Olympics in London in July, as well as be in for lots of other spot prizes.
